NYSPHSAA Announces Partnership with New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal

NYSIR Will Pay for Football Coaches Certification in Heads Up Football

Latham, NY-The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is proud to announce a partnership with the New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal (NYSIR). As part of the partnership NYSIR is covering the costs for up to six football coaches, per school, to complete online and in-person training offered by USA Football in the Heads Up Football program.

Heads Up Football is an on-line coaching certification course offered by USA Football and available on the NFHS Learn website (nfhslearn.com). The course is made up of four major parts: concussion recognition and response, heat preparedness and hydration, sudden cardiac arrest, proper equipment fitting along with shoulder tackling and blocking. There is also an in-person session, organized by the sections in conjunction with USA Football, that a minimum of one coach per school must attend.

“We are thrilled that this partnership with NYSIR will allow NYSPHSAA coaches to utilize the Heads Up Football course,” said Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “The safety and well being of our student-athletes is our top priority, and with NYSIR offering to cover the costs to train our football coaches in Heads Up Football it shows the level of commitment NYSIR has to keeping kids safe on the football field.”

New York State leads the country in number of schools utilizing the USA Football Heads Up program. The goal of Heads Up Football is to create a curriculum for football safety and, promote higher standards and consistent performance. According to USA Football, there are thousands of school districts across the country already using the program.

“We are so pleased to be working together with NYSPHSAA and its many dedicated members in sponsoring this training,” said Brett Carruthers, NYSIR Director of Risk Management.  “Together we are minimizing the risk to student-athletes who participate in the sport of football.”
