NYSPHSAA Announces 2018-19 Participation Survey Results
Game Day Cheer and 8-Man Football Added to Survey for First Time
Latham, NY- The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) has announced over a half million student-athletes in its 788-school membership participated in interscholastic athletics during the 2018-19 school year, according to its annual Participation Survey.
The data is presented based on a 100% return of the survey from NYSPHSAA athletic administrators. The results show that 562,369 student-athletes participate which breaks down to 296,368 boys (52.7%) and 266,001 girls (47.3%) on varsity, junior varsity, freshmen, or modified interscholastic athletic teams. Overall, there were 32,247 athletic programs offered with the highest number of student-athletes (268,252) participating in varsity programs.
“To see over a half million student-athletes participate in interscholastic sports in New York State is truly remarkable,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “We continue to see the value of participating in athletics within our organization and we are thrilled to have a 100% return rate on the participation survey from our member schools”
This is the first time the sport of Game Day Cheer has been included in the Participation Survey. In the survey, football was broken down into schools offering traditional 11-man football and 8-man football last season. In the 2017-18 school year 562,207 student-athletes participated in interscholastic athletics.
New York is third in the country behind Texas and California for the total number of student-athletes participating in high school athletics according to the latest National Federation of High School Athletic Associations (NFHS) Participation Survey. The NFHS survey includes high school level participants while the NYSPHSAA survey results include both high school and modified level programs and participants.
