LATHAM, NY- The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) announces it has entered into a formal agreement with AliveTek and HazingPrevention.Org to tailor a hazing and prevention curriculum for its member schools.
The course, Hazing Prevention: It's Everyone's ResponsibilityTM High School Edition is the first of its kind in New York State. AliveTek tailored the course to fit the needs of NYSPHSAA and specifically focuses on the student-athlete in NYS. NYSPHSAA is aiming to launch the program in January 2017 to its membership, which will be accessed through www.nysphsaa.org when it’s live.
“Hazing prevention education needs to start before a student-athlete enters a collegiate program or whatever a student’s next phase of life is,” said Special Programs Coordinator Kristen Jadin who worked with student-athletes at Mercer University in Macon, GA before coming to NYSPHSAA. “Many high school students think they understand what hazing is, but I quickly discovered that is not the case due to lack of education on this topic. This hazing prevention program teaches student-athletes how to prevent hazing before it occurs and provides alternative activities for team bonding. The program even goes a step further and teaches students how to handle a situation if prevention is too late.”
HazingPrevention.Org is a national organization dedicated to empowering people to prevent hazing, by providing education and resources, and building partnerships with others. AliveTek, Inc. provides custom e-Learning solutions to universities and non-profit associations. The company is known for its innovative designs, consultative approach and personalized service offerings.
“The facilitator’s kit allows for a guided discussion, in real-time, using the HazingPrevention.Org framework. It’s a great tool to help guide students to make smart decisions and opens up a whole new avenue for conversations about the problem of hazing,” said Sandy Mills-Alford, AliveTek Inc. President and CEO.
“Hazing is a topic in the forefront of athletics in our state and entering into a partnership with AliveTek and HazingPrevention.Org will provide our member schools an opportunity to educate and inform their coaches, athletes and parents,” said Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “Expanding our programs to offer a curriculum in hazing will provide an additional benefit to our membership.”
More information will be posted on the program at www.nysphsaa.org.
