2016 NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame Countdown: David R. Kelly

David Kelly is recognized as a standout representative of Section 4 athletics for almost 50 years.  Kelly has been leading successful programs in football, track and field, and boys junior varsity basketball for Delaware Academy.

He earned 272 career wins as the head football coach for Delaware Academy. From 1984 until 1987, Kelly’s football program had a 34-game win streak. During the 1980s, Delaware Academy has a .801 winning percentage, the highest of any Section 4 football team in the 80’s. During his career, he coached his teams to ten league titles, nine Section 4 titles, two regional titles, and t a NYSPHSAA Class C Championship in 2001.

In addition to his successful years as a football coach, Kelly developed a very competitive track and field program as well.  Over his 32 years as head coach, he developed 19 Section 4 champions and led his team to 32 Susquenango league titles. He also served on the New York State Track and Field Committee for 20 years from 1979 until 1998.

Section 4 inducted Kelly into its Hall of Fame in 2009. Today, Kelly continues to coach boys junior varsity basketball at Delaware Academy and serves on the Section 4 Football Committee, which he has been a part of for 30 years.

Prior to Kelly’s tremendous coaching career, he graduated from Delaware Academy, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State and a Master’s degree from Indiana State at Terre Haute.
