Sound Shore Gets First Swing at Girls Tennis Championships

After four years at Tri-City Fitness Club in Latham, the NYSPHSAA Girls Tennis State Championship gets a new location this October. Sound Shore Indoor Tennis in Port Chester will host for the first time in history. Sound Shore just received the USTA 2016 Facilities Award, one of only 12 nationwide. The award showcases facility layout, maintenance, community involvement and programs

“We are very excited about hosting the Girls Tennis Championships this October. We hope it is the beginning of a long and happy relationship with the NYSPHSAA,” said Angela Stevens, club manager.

Over three days, 100 athletes will compete in over 100 matches to determine the top singles and doubles players in the State. Prior to Tri-City hosting the event the last four years, the championship was hosted at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius for 14 years.

Sound Shore, meanwhile, is experienced in hosting other major tournaments including many USTA level 1 junior tournaments, both boys and girls, over the years.  In February 2017, they will host the Boys 14S, a national, category 2 tournament.

“It’s exciting to go to a new venue, said Chris Horgan, NYSPHSAA Girls Tennis Coordinator.  Sound Shore has ample courts, excellent viewing for spectators and has been very enthusiastic in welcoming our event. I am looking forward to a great experience for the athletes competing this fall at Sound Shore.”

The tournament will be held October 29th – 31st with that Monday also being the first ever Federation Tennis Championship in which winners of the NYSPHSAA, PSAL, CHSAA and AIS will play off against each other.
