NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame Countdown - Persio 'Andy' Capellan

Author: Claire Deegan, Intern

Persio “Andy” Capellan is one of the most successful cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field coaches of New York State. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, then obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from New York University and a Masters in Administration at Iona College.

“It is absolutely a tremendous honor being inducted into the Hall of Fame.  No question that I am humbled to be considered as one of those who through the accomplishments of the athletes was fortunate to be chosen for this honor,” Andy said. “Coaches have always been the people who I’ve admired throughout my life because they gave me the tools that made me the man and coach I am today.”

In 1975, Capellan began his coaching career with football at Stuyvesant High School. Shortly after, he became head coach for the girls track program at the school for five years. Andy then became a teacher, administrator, and the girls’ cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field coach at New Rochelle High School of Section I.

Over the last 38 years of coaching at New Rochelle, Andy led his teams to a total of 54 league titles, 48 Westchester County titles, and 39 Section I Class A Championships. His outdoor track teams have won every league title since 1996 and won Sectional title every year since 1991. He also coached 43 individual NYSPHSAA state champions across 49 events as well as nine relay teams. One of Capellan’s athletes won the 2008 Nike Outdoor National Championships in the 400m hurdles and also coached a National Champion 4x200m relay team.

Andy is an active member of the Section I Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Committees, the Glen Loucks Games Committee, and has been the meet director for the Section I Class B Track and Field Championships. He was inducted into the New Rochelle Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and also the New Balance Track and Field Center Hall of Fame in 2016.

Between 1988 and 2018, Andy has also been recognized as Coach of the Year with support of his fellow coaches and the media on 23 occasions. His awards also include New York State Coach of the Year Award for outdoor track and the same award for cross country in both 2015 and 2016. Andy is still currently the coach of the cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field teams at New Rochelle.

The 2018 NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame Class will be inducted on Wednesday, July 25th at 6 pm at High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, NY.
