WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO ALBANY FOR 14th TIME IN 16 YEARS
By David Anes, NYSPHSAA Intern Spring 2020

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Wrestling State Championships return once again to the Times Union Center in Albany from February 27-29.

This year will be the 56th year the state tournament will be conducted and the 14th time the Times Union Center has hosted the event. The first year the event came to Albany was in 2005 when the arena was known as the Pepsi Arena.

“The Times Union Center is one of the best venues in the northeast,” said Marty Sherman, Wrestling State Chair. “We’re grateful for such a great arena, outstanding staff and central location for our wrestling state championships.  This year once again will be a competitive, intense tournament with so many college-bound wrestlers and a female returning to competition. It’s going to be exciting and our committee and the NYSPHSAA Office are looking forward to putting on a great event.”

All matches will be streamed live by the NFHS Network, the official streaming partner of NYSPHSAA. Approximately 500 student-athletes will compete in 15 weight classes and two divisions. For the first time, NYSPHSAA will recognize the 7th and 8th place finishers on the awards podium for each weight class, thus additional consolation matches will be added to the Saturday afternoon schedule. Qualifiers will represent all 11 NYSPHSAA sections, along with schools from the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) of New York City.

Three ticket packages are being offered for the tournament including a “Premium Package” for $39. Purchasers would receive tickets for each of the first two sessions along with access to premium seating for the third session (finals only). One-session tickets for $10 and three-session package tickets without premium seating for $30 are available for purchase as well. An official schedule is listed below:
