INDOOR TRACK & FIELD QUALIFIERS SPRINT TO OCEAN BREEZE FOR STATE MEET
By David Anes, NYSPHSAA Intern Spring 2020

The 2020 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Indoor Track and Field State Championships will be held for the fourth consecutive year at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on March 7. Similar to previous years, the meet will be a combined event with boys and girls events competing in individual events but simultaneously. The facility is a 135,000 square foot, state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility with a banked track that can also convert from six to eight lanes with an incline up to 4 ½ feet. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 8:45am and competition will follow at 9:00am.

“The Ocean Breeze facility has enhanced our indoor track and field program greatly,” said Dave Hennessey, the Indoor Track State Chair. “Starting with the size of the arena, we can once again have the boys and girl championships going on at the same time. The arena provides excellent site lines for the competition while the lighting is outstanding and the banked mondo track provides fast times for all competitors.  The ability to quickly raise and lower the track provides opportunities for our wheel-chair athletes to compete as well. What also excites parents and fans is the acres of free parking within easy walking distance to Ocean Breeze. Both the boys and girls committees are looking forward to this year's meet.”

The 2020 state tournament marks the 42nd year of a combined state meet for boys and girls. Cornell University had hosted the meet for 11 consecutive years until Ocean Breeze won the bid in 2017. Ocean Breeze will host the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track & Field Championships through 2022. A detailed event schedule for March 7th can be found at nysphsaa.org. The NFHS Network, the official streaming partner of NYSPHSAA, will broadcast this year’s state meet live online. Spectators can purchase tickets online prior to the event for $8 or on-site for $10.
