 Brewster’s Miller leads after Round 1 of NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship;
Section V leads team standings
ITHACA — The first round of the NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship was completed on late Sunday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University under less than ideal weather conditions in Ithaca. The start of the round was delayed by two hours and one hour later those on the golf course were summoned off with inclement weather in the area.
Michael Miller (Brewster HS-Section I) is the leader after the first round with a two-under-par 70. He has a two-stroke lead and is followed by Yarik Merkulov (Penfield HS-V), and Andrew Lane (McQuaid Jesuit HS-V), who each carded scores of 72. Gavin Hall (Pittsford Mendon HS-V) gave Section V three players in the top four after his round of 73.
Section V leads the team scoring with a best seven-out-of-nine total of 540 (+36), followed by second-place Section IV with a score of 562 (+58) and third-place Section I with a score of 563 (+59). Section V is vying to become the second section in tournament history to win three sectional championships in a row, the first since Section IV from 1981 to 1983.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with the second of two rounds starting at 8 a.m. This is one half-hour later than the original start time to give the grounds staff enough time to prepare the course after nearly two inches of rain in the last 48 hours.
