NYSPHSAA to hold eighth annual Soccer Coaches Clinic

Friday, May. 30 at the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Oneonta

LATHAM, N.Y. (April 29, 2008)  – The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) will host its 8th annual soccer coaches clinic on Friday, May 30th at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York. The clinic is co-sponsored by Brine.

The clinic will offer workshops covering a wide range of topics including first touch and thinking quickly, games to develop skills, functional training for defenders, controlling speed of play, striking the ball, passing/receiving the ball under pressure, developing keepers and much more.

The clinic features some of the top soccer coaches and experts from the professional, college and high school ranks including Dr. David Masur, Associate Athletic Director and 16 year head coach at St. Johns University. Masur, who has a career record of 296-92-51, led St. Johns to the 1996 NCAA National Championship and guided his teams to 15 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Other clinicians include 25-year soccer veteran Daniel Gaspar,currently the men’s head coach at the University of Hartford; Chris Waterbury, men’s head coach at SUNY Plattsburgh for 23 years where he has won six SUNYAC Coach of the Year awards; Karen Waterbury, winningest coach in SUNY Plattsburgh women’s soccer history with a record of 207-107-17; Michael Campisi, boys head coach at Shenendehowa High School since 1980 where he has won six Class A State Championships and has a record of 475-82-49 (8th in New York State); Bryce Colby, girls head coach at Niskayuna where he has won two State Championships and led his teams to four State Tournament appearances; and Alex Brannan, four-time All-American at SUNY Oneonta and current Oneonta high school boys head coach.

The one-day clinic begins with a Coaches Cracker Barrel question and answer session at the Holiday Inn Oneonta at 8 pm on Thursday, May 29th, free of charge.

Registration for the clinic is from 7:30 am – 8:15 am the following day, and the workshops will take place from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Early registration is only $75 if received by May 21st.
